German literacy courses for second-language learners are aimed at people who have already largely mastered the Latin alphabet, but are unaccustomed to learning and prefer to learn at a slower pace. The progression of the so-called second-character learner courses is located between the ‘normal’ progression of the general integration courses and the slow progression of the literacy courses.
Participants initially have 900 teaching units at their disposal to reach level B1. This is followed by the German test for immigrants.
If the test result is unsatisfactory, customers have a further 300 teaching units at their disposal to repeat modules if necessary and take the DTZ again.
As these courses are mainly attended by participants who are new to learning, the first module of the course focuses on reading and writing, and only then, from the second module onwards, is more emphasis placed on grammar.
Second language learning courses currently take place in the afternoons and evenings. Participation is possible with and without integration course authorisation. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) subsidises a total of 1200 teaching units.
